Specifically being able to predict her animagus form and markings would give Rita some serious problems with pretending to be currently learning. All of which means that Rita would be in deep trouble if she tried to pretend she was learning, and Hermione outed her. So, again the Ministry would expect a certain time to pass after registering your intention to try. The learning process involves holding the leaf of a Mandrake in your mouth for an entire month, for example. There's additional information on Pottermore, that statesĪs you might imagine, you can’t just become an Animagus overnight. You need to register for a learner's permit and then do the tests. The Ministry want to know up front, much the same as you can't just send a letter to your local government institution saying that you can drive. This suggests you can't just rock up at the Ministry and say "I'm an Animagus, please register my animal and markings". "Your father and Sirius here were the cleverest students in the school, and they were lucky too, because the Animagus transformation can go horribly wrong - one reason the Ministry keeps a close watch on those attempting to do it." She can be truly vile, and is greatly disliked by those in the wizarding community who are on the side of truth and justice.The Ministry want to know about Animagii before they successfully complete the transformation. She doesn't care who her writing harms, what reputations she destroys, what problems her accusations lead to, and doesn't fear repercussions in the slightest. She twists facts or more often than not ignores then completely when writing her works, or reports them accurately and truthfully if the information is risque and damning, not meant to be seen by the public eye. She has blatantly stated she doesn't care about the truth, instead choosing to write what makes headlines or readers may want to read about more. Using her animal form of a beetle, she is able to eavesdrop on private conversations without anyone knowing she's there, giving her access to private information that isn't meant to be made public and using that to write her gossip tabloids. A notorious journalist specializing in slander and defamation, Rita is actually a legitimate criminal (albeit unknown) due to the fact that she is an unregistered Animagus, which is illegal.
